About the Parish
Why a Town Council ?
The area we live in was two distinct places. Whitehill and Bordon. Bordon itself at the start of the Edwardian era was little more than a hamlet with just over 100 inhabitants. The MOD, around 1903, begins the construction of Bordon military moving onto land in Bordon and Longmoor. In 1928 the Parish of Whitehill was created out of the Parishes of Selborne and Headley.
A long time before this but after the Norman conquest large areas of land were enclosed creating Woolmer Forest covering Whitehill and the surrounding land. It was here that William the Conqueror would hunt deer, giving rise to the deer emblem that we see on today's Parish crest. Much later, in 1826, a turnpike road was cut through the forest linking the growing towns of Farnham and Petersfield. Followed some 30 years later by another turnpike road linking Liphook and Greatham. Travellers would pay to travel on these roads and as often happens a 'stopping post' grew in this area. This settlement became known as Whitehill
Bordon's importance as a military area began in 1863 when the War Office purchased 1,600 acres for training land.
Whitehill and Bordon continued to grow throughout the years. Whitehill's growth came about by the increasing importance of hop growing in the area. The 70's and 80's saw large growth in the housing market and modern estates developed linking two villages, creating today's Whitehill and Bordon community.
The boundaries between the two effectively disappeared and given the now sizable population it made sense for the two to merge and form today's town.
Scenes around Whitehill
A very recognisable building, where the A325 meets Chalet Hill, currently occupied by Coral hasn't changed much over the years. People with long memories may remember it as a shoe shop "Frisby's". Whatever you think of it is a landmark for Bordon, in a prominent position seen by visitors to the Town or just people passing by on the main Road.
Our town boasts a relatively new and modern fire station in Conde Way, an essential service protecting people and property. The brave and hard working people at the station are on hand to respond to fire and other emergencies in our town. Well done to them!
